How the Weather will affect your Restaurant

As Winter arrives, the weather will get worse and as a Restaurant owner you may think that the weather will not affect you. However, you are wrong as the weather will affect your restaurant in a number of ways which means that you will have to plan to deal with these changes so that you can continue to run your business and gain profit. Here a few of the effects of the weather that you will have to deal with.

How the Weather will affect your Restaurant

Demand of Customers

In the Winter when the weather is bad, many people decide to stay in and will not want to travel to a restaurant as the temperatures will be cold and it will most likely be raining. This will lead to the number of customers you receive decreasing as people will stay at home, this will mean that your sales will decrease which will lead to the profit margin decreasing. One way you will be able to combat this is by cutting costs in the winter by not buying as many supplies as you know that you will be quiet and will not sell as many products which means that you will pay less on your supplies which will decrease your costs and prevent the profit margin from decreasing. When it is quiet in the winter, you should make sure that you only hire the employees that you need and not have as many staff in the restaurant at the same time as they will not be needed and will lead to the overall wages of the restaurant decreasing. This will lead to the costs of your business decreasing and will repair the damage to your profit margin. To lure people out of their house in the bad weather, you should do winter deals as this will lead to the customers coming to the restaurant as they will not want to miss out on the deal. This will lead to the restaurant having more business and will lead to the sales increasing which will lead to the profit margin increasing.

In the Summer when the weather is nice, people are more likely to go out. This will lead to more people coming to your restaurant as they will want to get out of their house which will mean that your restaurant will be busier. This means that more products will be sold leading to the sales increasing and the profit margin widening. One way you can expand the seating area of your restaurant is by having an outdoors sitting area which will allow you to cater for the larger demand of people without the restaurant being too packed. The outdoor sitting area might also attract people to the restaurant as it will allow them to enjoy the sun when eating which will lead to their needs and wants being met and could lead to them visiting the restaurant repeatedly which will also increase sales and will lead to the profit margin widening.

Demand for Products

In the Winter when it is cold, people will not want products which are summery such as spicy foods or cocktails. This means that you shouldn’t sell products like them as they will not be successful in the winter and will not make many sales. In the Winter, you should make sure that you serve hot food such as Roast dinners and soup as that is what the public will want as they will want to be warmed up. This will lead to the customers coming to your restaurant as they know their needs will be catered for and they will be able to order the products that they want which will lead to the sales increasing. This will have a huge effect on the profit margin as it will widen.

In the Summer when it is hot, you should focus on selling products such as wraps, pasta and salads as that is what the customers will want. This will allow you to cater for the customer’s needs and wants as they will not want hot food which will lead to them coming to the restaurant more often as they know that will be able to buy the products they want. This will lead to them becoming loyal customers which will lead to the sales increasing and the profit margin widening. To maximise your sales, you should also sell drinks such as cocktails and do special deals on them such as “2 for 1 cocktails”. This will attract a lot of customers during the summer season as you will be offering something that they will want and they will not want to miss out on the deal which will lead to a rapid increase in the sales of the business as the restaurant will become very busy leading to the profit margin widening.

Produce

During the year, the weather will change drastically, this will have an effect on the produce that is available as not all of the produce you require will be able to grow in certain conditions. This means that you will have to ensure that you have reliable suppliers all year who will be able to supply you with the produce you need. This is because if you need the produce to create your products and you are unable to get them due to the weather, it will lead to you will not being able to meet the needs of your customers. This will lead to them becoming unloyal and going to another restaurant which will lead to your sales and competitiveness decreasing leading to the profit margin struggling. Some fresh produce may become expensive in the winter such as Strawberries because they will be hard to grow which will lead to the demand being greater than the supply and may lead to you having to buy them from abroad. This means that your costs will increase rapidly leading to your profit margin struggling. This means that you should try and minimise the amount of certain produce you need when the supply of it is low because this will allow you to reduce your costs and will allow your profit margin to rise.
